Ping HUANG has successively served as Deputy Director of the Institute of Sociology, Director of the International Cooperation Bureau, and Director of the Institute of American Studies of CASS. During that period, he was elected as Vice Chairman of the Intergovernmental Council (IGC) of UNESCO's Management of Social Transformations (MOST) Program (1998-2002), Member of the UNESCO International Jury for Major Science Projects (2003-2005), Vice President of the International Social Science Council (2004-2006) and Vice President of the International Sociological Association (2002-2012). He received a PhD Degree in Sociology from the London School of Economics in 1991.

He has chaired research programs by National Social Science Fund, central ministries and commissions, FAO, UNESCO, EU, etc. He also organized high-level round-table meetings on international issues such as EU-China High-Level Cultural Forum in Brussels, Paris, Beijing for 4 times and CASS Forum in Washington, London, etc. He is also a leading talent in national "Group of Four" and in the field of philosophy and social sciences, and enjoys the special allowance of the State Council.

He has long engaged in his research on social development, labor migration, urban-rural relations, China-U.S. relations, China-EU relations, globalization, Chinese path and modernity. He has published or edited books including Working for Survival, Unfinished Interpretations, Misunderstanding and Development, Resigning the Contract with the Earth, Community Rebuilding (Volume I and II), Poverty Reduction among Migrants, Experiences and Observations from Western China, Rural China and Cultural Consciousness, Motherland in my Dream: Social Change, Globalization, and China's Way towards Modernity, China's Soft Power Building among Overseas Chinese, China and Globalization: the Washington consensus, the Beijing consensus, or what? and China Reflected. He has also translated The Consequences of Modernity, Adam Smith in China and other important works.
